Godric weighing heavily on Eric’s mind.

And you can tell. :) It’s amazing how he’s got that “Godric” look in his eyes that is recognizable by now. That mixture of pain and sadness. He also has a “Sookie” look. :) AS really bring so much to his portrayal of Eric. People talk about “badass” and “swag,” and fine, it’s fun and all, but for me, it’s the subtle things. The nuances. The depth.

This is so true — it’s very much the little things. I think he does such an amazing job of being Eric. It always feels like Eric is a very whole and complete person in his mind. He manages to make everything Eric does have some emotional sense. He really has that gift as an actor, and it makes me trust him as much as I trust the writers. It’s as if he really is Eric’s strongest advocate, and it’s not that he needs Eric to be a perfect man, but to be a perfectly flawed one; a real one. Amazing performance on what would be nothing but a silly, campy, schlocky genre show without this kind of seriousness from the actors.

Well, the story, the themes, the exploration of the human nature in the writing of the show has a little to do with it, too. lol. I mean, it’s easier to be serious about your character when the character is written as fully realized and not a cardboard cutout.

But I know what you mean. It’s a collaborative effort, and it’s what makes me love the show in general, and Eric in particular. :)

That’s very true, and I totally don’t mean to downplay the writing or anything else, but just picture it — the same writing, the same structuring, and plot, and actors that didn’t really pull it off, or didn’t take it seriously?

Oh, totally! As we have proof of: JM. ‘nuff said.

I can totally see the same script being played VERY differently and to its detriment. In fairness, it’s the overall vision, the writing, the directing, and everything else, but the actors are the business end — they make it real and bring these characters to life. Alexander Skarsgard obviously holds Eric in his mind in a very holistic way, and plays him with beautiful seriousness and sympathy. I think it makes all the difference.

Absolutely it does. A good, inspired, dedicated actor can elevate mediocre material, but with good material? They fly with it! And AS does so with tremendous joy and conviction. :)

Amen.

Listen to a new audio interview with Alex!

Catching Up with Alexander Skarsgård

This week on True Blood Radio, Alexander Skarsgard joins us in bed* for our annual chat catching up on what he’s doing during hiatus, talking about Eric and True Blood season 5, and what he’s looking forward to in season 6. It’s a delightful interview and we’re sure you’ll enjoy it.

*Sort of. Mel is on bed rest after sustaining injuries from a fall, but thanks to the miracle of modern technology, was able to conduct the interview from there.

True-Blood.net

Surprising he had anything to say about Eric in season 5 considering Eric didn’t really have anything to do last season. Joking, of course, but the moderators of this website were pretty firm in their belief that he didn’t do anything even after many of us outlined very specifically why they were wrong. After listening to this interview I feel somewhat vindicated when they mentioned the survey to him and how some of us argued vehemently against their perception of Eric’s arc. He was very happy that there were people that got it, that understood the nuances and subtleties of what was going on with Eric. :))

Yes, Eric’s story arc was about emotional growth not a flashy descent into madness.

Haha! rebloggiing for the “flashy decent into madness”… I have yet to listen to this interview..will do asap!
